1968 Hofner 500/1 Violin Bass (often called the "Beatle Bass") is a highly coveted vintage instrument. Known for its ultra-light weight (around 5 lbs) and deep, upright-like thump, late-1960s models are celebrated for their unique electronics and playability.
Key Specifications & 1968 Features
Pickups: 1968 models transitioned to the iconic Hofner "Blade" single-coil pickups (with large black bezels). These offer a higher output than the earlier "staple" pickups.
Electronics: Features a distinct mother-of-pearl control panel. Controls include independent volumes for each pickup, along with switches for Rhythm/Solo and Bass/Treble boost/cut.
Neck: A narrow, comfortable maple neck (usually 3-piece) with a 30-inch short scale. 1968 marks the transitional era for headstock logos; you will frequently see the gold-colored Hofner "umlaut" script decal.
Body: A fully hollow, symmetrical violin shape made of a spruce top and flame maple back and sides.
Hardware: Usually equipped with individual tuners (often open-gear "Rugby Ball" or Schaller tuners) and an adjustable floating ebony bridge with a nickel trapeze tailpiece. String height at the 12th fret is 6/32".
Delivers with gigbag.
