The Gretsch 6161 Electromatic Dual-Twin is a highly sought-after vintage tube amplifier manufactured for Gretsch by Valco (the legendary Chicago manufacturer behind Supro, National, and Airline). Produced from the mid-1950s through the late 1960s, it is famous for its distinct, quirky speaker configurations, thick tube saturation, and gorgeous organic tremolo.
Because it was produced for over a decade, its specifications shifted significantly across three distinct eras.
The Era Breakdown & Specs1. The Mid-to-Late 1950s (The "Tweed" & "Two-Tone" Era)
The earliest iterations came in a classic diagonal tweed wrap, which transitioned into a distinct two-tone gray textured cloth with back-facing controls.
Power Output: ~14 Watts
Power Tubes: 2 x 6V6GT
Rectifier: 5Y3GT
Speaker Setup: A very unusual "Hi-Fi" array featuring two 11x6" Rola Alnico elliptical (oval) speakers paired with a single 3" or 5" Rola Alnico tweeter.
Vibe: Focused, midrange-forward grit that compresses beautifully. Think raw, early rock 'n' roll and swampy blues.
The Early 1960s (The "Country Gentleman" Era)
By the early '60s, the amp was updated to look more like the "wraparound" styles meant to pair with Gretsch's high-end hollowbody guitars.
Power Output: ~17 Watts
Power Tubes: 2 x 6973 (A higher-voltage tube known for incredible headroom that transitions into a fierce, aggressive crunch when pushed—similar to old Supro amps).
Speaker Setup: Remained split. Many still featured the dual oval speakers plus a tweeter, though some transitioned toward standard round speaker layouts.
Vibe: More aggressive, articulate highs and a distinctive bark. This era is heavily associated with the iconic "Jimmy Page" studio tones.
Key Features
The Tremolo: Valco’s bias-modulated tremolo circuit is legendary. It provides a lush, swampy, fluid warble that feels deeply integrated into the tone, rather than just sitting on top of it.
Two Channels: Typically features a "Treble" channel and a "Standard" channel with independent inputs, allowing you to jumper them or choose your flavor of brightness.
Point-to-Point Wiring: Like most Valco-made amps of the era, these were entirely hand-wired on terminal strips, making them highly serviceable and rugged.
Original two prong cord still there.
