Description

The Harmony Montclair (specifically model H956) is a striking, vintage acoustic archtop guitar manufactured in Chicago by the Harmony Company between roughly 1955 and 1968. It is highly recognizable for its bold, jet-black finish and mid-century "space age" aesthetic.

Key Design & Specs

  • The Look: It features a highly polished, rich-black finish contrasted against dual f-holes. Early models (mid-to-late 1950s) featured an "Aerojet-like" application of bright, atomic-era "Harmometal" (aluminum) binding along the edges. Later 1960s versions swapped this out for thick White/Black/White plastic binding.+1
  • Body Size: Most commonly found in Harmony's "Grand Auditorium" size, boasting a wide 16 85-inch lower bout that gives it a punchy, projecting acoustic voice.
  • Tonewoods: It typically featured a solid arched (though pressed, not hand-carved) spruce or mahogany top with birch or maple back and sides, paired with a chunky, comfortable C-shaped hardwood neck.
  • The "Cutaway" Illusion: While the wood body itself is a full, non-cutaway archtop, Harmony famously equipped the Montclair with a thick, white molded pickguard cut into a specific geometric shape that visually mimics the look of a cutaway guitar at a distance.
  • 1955–1957: No truss rod, 19 frets, and aluminum Harmometal trim.

Perfect for slide guitar playing. Round neck. Will need neck set for regular guitar playing.
